Energy Efficient Building Design, Thermal Performance Assessments

BDAQ SW Regional Awards Winner – Residential Alterations & Additions more than $200,000

Builder – David Kennedy Constructions

Extensions & alterations to Toowoomba’s character homes is a speciality of Eco Blueprints.  This extension & restoration involved upgrading of the internal living spaces to a modern standard of comfort and liveability whilst preserving the external traditional architectural aesthetic of the 1920s original dwelling.  The original dwelling was set amongst established gardens and the design compliments these areas with outlook to the gardens from the new living areas.  Restoration of the existing dwelling involved restoring closed in verandas to original open verandas and upgrading of insulation etc. for increased thermal comfort.

BDAQ Design Awards State Winner – Residential Alterations/Additions.

A two storey extension taking advantage of a sloping site with traditional features to compliment an existing single storey dwelling.  Verandas are on the eastern side of this escarpment site and provide spectacular views while shading internal spaces from the hot eastern sun.

An extension to the southern side of an existing character house required a solution that would give winter solar access to the proposed living areas.  A narrow connecting galley to the existing dwelling with courtyards either side allows for a bright and sun filled contemporary extension.  The contemporary external aesthetic of the extension within a Council Heritage Precinct was made possible by shielding the new work from the streetscape view.  The tzzzhermal mass of a concrete slab for the extension provides a thermally comfortable living space unlike the existing dwelling which has limited winter solar access and timber floors.
